We like the look of these 20cL mini bottles of Cigar Malt Selections from Glasgow-based Douglas Laing & Co. Ltd. They caught our eye on account of their resemblance to the crimped vials that injectable medicines usually come in. Also, the labels are rather prescription-like. Not so far-fetched really, since whisky does, after all have a history of being used for “medicinal purposes.” (That’s the story that we repeatedly find ourselves using and we’re sticking to it.) But their web site explains that the labels are actually based on hand-marked, distillery sample bottles:
“Replicating the sample bottles sent to us from stock held at the Distilleries—these wee 20cl bottles appear to have been hand written by one of the team pulling the sample (full marks for legibility!)”
They select specific bottlings from the 700cl capacities and fill first about 150-200 of the 20cl bottles – so these are little “rarities” – small bottles, in small quantities, from a very small bottling, from a small family company. They allow the consumer to taste a small amount before investing in a larger bottle and they are also causing quite a stir in the gift giving sector of the whisky business.
Additionally, the prospect of offering a full 70cl bottle of a Cigar Malt to clientele, seems inappropriate and so they offer a 20cl capacity. Maybe it’s just enough for you and a friend to enjoy through the course of an evening with one of those great Havanas – rolled on a pair of golden, glistening thighs. Or maybe you’re the type who prefers to take their medication in blissful solitude, either way we think these 20cl bottles are just the thing to put you right back on your feet.
